Morocco For The Senses SEPT 2023

I don’t want to give the game away too much here as I remember the first time I came across this place and was completely surprised by what lay before my eyes. In Morocco, I had no idea this existed. It is World Heritage listed and maybe that’s all I should say! I am always busting to tell you what there is to see but also refraining as it becomes much more a journey of discovery with no expectations. The Days unfold as they do and as things present to us it may take us in an entirely different direction! This is a delight of travelling the way we do. There is a town nearby that is a delight to stroll through its lanes and alleys. The reason being is it seems to be relatively untouched with crumbling paint and weathered doors and people going about their daily lives. It is not difficult to meet the baker or a shepherd herding his sheep and children wanting to greet us.

The real attraction in Fes is the old Medina. It is easy to lose yourself in the labyrinth of narrow lanes but you won’t mind one little bit as aromas of spices, the tinkering of tradespeople and the donkeys laden with goods all vie for your attention. But we will have a local guide to show us this ancient city, in fact one of the oldest medieval cities in the world, that has much to see from crumbling old ruins, fascinating hard life in the tanneries, exquisite mosaics, Persian influenced architecture and a bustle of people in the bazaars. It has a great vibe and you will love our stay in a traditional riad. Our preference is local family owned riads and I will warn you, be prepared to get a sore neck in Morocco as you gaze at the architecture. Some of the riads will allow for rooftop dining as well as we luxuriate in brightly coloured cushions with the memorable sounds of the call to prayer echoing across the city.

Let’s travel to the mountains to Day! We will have some distance to drive to see the mountains before arriving Marrakech in a few Days time but the mountain scenery is worth it and a little other-worldly at times. It’s big country with spectacular gorges and canyons.We will take a couple of Days traversing the passes stopping along the way in a village that rises from the earth seemingly. Visit earthen ruins, an ancient mosque that is being restored, walk through the palmerie that uses a unique water channelling system and meet the farmers. I know a lovely family that we will visit in their home and share a meal with. There is also the chance to meet with nomadic families in the mountains experiencing life as they do. This is a very open part of our itinerary enabling us to make the best of opportunities as they arise. I hope my friend who plays the most beautiful music with origins from Mali will be around where we can share a night of singing and guitar under the night sky. These few Days will be a very unique opportunity to see life outside the cities.

Here we come Marrakech! A visit to Morocco is not complete without a visit to this vibrant city with its cosmopolitan feel mixed in with its ancient medina. You will be continually surprised with stunning architecture, stories, Marjorelle Gardens, Jewish quarters, Palaces, souqs and the famous Jemaa El Fna square comes to life as night falls with its street performers and cafes. Enjoy! How about a hammam? Shopping galore! Best I stop telling you too much more!

We head to the west coast now and pass through trees that are famous for their production of Argan oil. You will love the seaside atmosphere of the old walled cities. Explore the fortress and see artisans at work as we wind our way through the alleys of the medina. Great for shoppers too! The city knew many civilisations – including Portugese occupation, which affects much of its architecture – however it remains a small village with much history. The rustic look of blue doors and whitewash walls give this place a lot of atmosphere and a stroll through the port always finds something going on as the boats come in and the sellers display their fish products. Cafes with live music are a perfect way to chill! YOUR JOURNEY

Experience the seaside village not often visited. Spectacular coastline both rugged and beautiful, cruising the calm lagoon waters, eating fresh oysters from the back of a scooter in the street, fresh fish grilled on the beach, enjoy home cooked meals from a lovely local lady. You may like to learn how to cook ‘real’ couscous and traditional tagine. Spend time with a local fisherman. We will take a night visit for sunset at an intriguing sight on the beach below the cliffs and visit the local market. Try not to fall in love with this place! This was my home for 6 months and I will love to share with you!

To Day ends our amazing journey thru Morocco. You will be transported to Casablanca airport for your departure flight. You will take home with you a richness of feeling for this amazing land, it’s unforgettable travel experiences and a bigger heart for the people you have met. What a story!
